You are already logged in as root and don't need to login again. When you type the commands: ls / ls /oldroot you can see if pivot_root was successfully. You tried to mount a USB memory stick directly at startup. To do this you need to start using an initrd (remove root=...). Then mount the USB device and change root file system using pivot_root.
