If you're targeting 3.xx firmware, you should be able to use sceUtilityLoadAvModule() to get at the audio/video decoders from user mode. These functions are part of the kernel, so they don't need the vsh files. Did you remember to clear the SceDirent structure before calling sceIoDread()?
