ps2 memory card expander / expansion

Like a few people here I expect, I'm starting to run out of space on my regular 8mb sony memcard, and was thinking about buying one of those expander devices, where you plug the device into the ps2 and then plug the card into the other end of the device. You can pick up a 16mb expander on ebay for about 10 quid, which would give me a total of 24mb to play with.

Before I part with my hard earned cash, has anyone on here got one of these things and are there any issues or glitches which arise when running homebrew software off the card using the ps1drv exploit, etc.

Whats wrong with buying another memory card ? Seems so much easier, no worries, and maybe even cheaper.

Nah it actually works out a lot more expensive to buy another card, and I'd end up with less space in total.

Dunno about expander but I bought a Datel 16Mb memory card (for the price of a 8Mb genuine sony) and it works very well (exploit included)... so why not purchasing 64Mb one ? :D

I'm waiting for the 1G expansion card. ;)

Seriously, no one really makes a big card because you don't really need one. You really have to be a hard-core game junkie to need more than a couple 8M cards. They're also seriously over-priced given how cheap USB sticks are.

I recall seeing somewhere (in japanese) a way to mod an official ps2 memory card so instead of using its flash memory it uses a smart card. Whether that would work for making a bigger memory card that is fully compatible with magicgate is beyond me, but it seems the cose would definitely be more.

My infinity chip with older than v12 ps2 loves those megamemory16/32/64 cards, and they are not expensive, just not as reliable.

ok, i have just got hold of a 16 meg expander, and it seems to work fine for normal saved games. however i can't get the memcard exploit to work with it properly. the expander has a button on it which allows you to enable/disable the expanded memory. so in other words you can keep it plugged in between the ps2 and the memcard, but just have it act as a normal 8mb memcard. in this situation the exploit loads fine, but when you enable the extra memory it doesn't load - just boots into the ps1 game as normal. that's as far as i've got with experimenting with it as yet.

just to post my final conclusion on this product - don't buy one! they do seem to somehow upset the ps1drv exploit, which makes them a pain in the arse for homebrew, which is the reason i bought it in the first place. just buy a 32mb memory card instead, theyre cheap enough off ebay, so its a much easier option.
