Should guests be allowed to post? Discuss.

I am new to this forum but I am already tired of posts asking how to boot a backup without mod LOL :)

Registering is a fairly painless process, IMHO. It might give people a chance to stop and think "is this really a valid question" before posting (but probably not, unfortunately).

Maybe a big fat warning on the registration page:

• please don't ask us about copying legitimate games
• no, we don't know how to circumvent Sony's copy protection
• we can't help you extract sounds/models/textures/etc. from your game
• we don't have a list of cheat codes

That would be good, yeah. And maybe a list of link to other ressources where they could find some legal things.

Like gamefaqs for action replay codes, or psf2 archives for music extractions.

Quite frankly, ripping resources out of games is not exactly legal. Those resources are copyrighted by the publisher. Also, in some places the tools used to rip resources could be considered illegal, like in the U.S. where the DMCA almost certainly makes them illegal. Personally, I think if it's for your own personal use and not published then it's fine, but that's me talking and not the law.

In any case I don't think we should point people to sites that host ripping tools.

Guest posting disabled.

It seems that even with guest posting disabled, users still one to create these one-time use usernames and create havoc on the boards. Is it possible for users who don't have more than x number of posts to not be able to create new topics? That might slow them down, if only a little bit.

We are starting to attract unwanted attention. :?

I still don't understand the need to make people jump through hoops to join in to a conversation, especially since the idea of having a forum is to get people communicating in the first place.

So we get a few people who ask for the wrong things... that'll never change. Either ignore them, or educate them. *shrug*

I agree that we can't stop stupid questions being repeatedly asked, but is there any ways to minimize them?

One idea I just had was a "dumb questions" forum which is read only, and we move all dumb question threads to that forums. That is of course after enough ridicule has been dished out. :) (eg the current Jumper thread).

I like that idea Oobles, maybe they could just be moved into the Off-Topic forum? Since those questions are off-topic anyway :).

I am still unsure of how that's really going to change anything.

I'll repeat my earlier suggestion: at registration, we could display a condensed FAQ -- mostly what we are NOT interested in doing here (warez, emus, mods, etc.) Make them hit an "I agree" button before their account is activated.

It probably won't significantly reduce the number of lusers posting, but at least we can feel more justified in telling them to go pound sand, and/or locking/deleting the thread without further comment (or moving it to the "Dumb Questions" section).

My final thought on this issue: yes, it's a little annoying, but it hasn't reached an unmanageable level yet, IMHO -- the signal-to-noise ratio is still pretty good here.

Well, I agree with oopo that some suggestions are not likely
to do much about the problem, other than make some of us
feel better. Feeling better is good, someting concrete to solve
the problem is better.

I do like the idea of forcing a faq to be read at registration.
Not many other places do I see it mentioned what the
expectations of the forums are.

Heck, even put in a multiple-choice quiz to make sure
it was read :)

b. Techniques of copying/extracting/executing data that are
copyrighted, that would violate copyright laws in any
country where it is sold. (In other words, if its legal

a lawyer so the wording isn't bulletproof)

Whether or not users are forced to read the forum rules, I'm going to start deleting these types of threads outright, as I'm sick of it. If you're going to take the time to formulate a multi-paragraph response to these threads, just be forewarned that that topic might disappear.

I just deleted the "USB override" thread.

I don't mean to say I told you so to anyone, but I've said many times that the best thing we could do is be aggressive with locking and possibly deleting threads, and as part of this having plenty of moderators so as to lessen the time between a moderator being on the forum. (TBH, I'm not sure how many there are right now, I was under the impression there is only 2 or 3)

Mrbrown, its not worth getting sick over :)

BTW, won't bother me if I make multi-parapgrah responses that get
later deleted on those topics. While I want their occurances reduced
as much as anyone, I don't plan to take them seriously when they do
occur. I either have "fun" with them, or if there is some part of the
posts with merit, respond to that part. My emotions are needed
elswhere, so I prefer to avoid getting sick over them. :)

Actually, www.ps2newz.net shutdown so they could move domains & is now called Consolenewz & it is located at http://www.consolenewz.net/ . About 1-2 months ago, the moderator at Consolenewz took total control of the site & he banned all PS2NEWZ moderators, then PS2NEWZ moderators who were banned reopened PS2NEWZ under the name PS2-Scene which is located at http://www.ps2-scene.org/

Well, I voted for No since guests are more likely to ask questions releasted to the PS2 Warez scene such as how to load up backups, et al.
