Help! My ps2 turned into a christmas tree!

Post by radioactive758z »

My [friends] ps2 won't work anymore. The front LED just flashes red/green and it won't play any games/dvds anymore.

This happened out of nowhere, it was not modified or even opened up in anyway.

Anybody have any ideas on how to fix it? I am very comfortable with opening up the console/soldering if that is needed to fix it.

Thanks.

Your information is a little too sparse to give any real clues, and at least two points must be clarified.

1: You say that it "just flashes red/green", but does this mean that it keeps flashing continuously, without user interaction, or do you merely refer to the colour change that occurs when you try to switch it ON (green LED) from the STANDBY state (red LED). In the former case, there must be some serious internal fault, but the latter case is perfectly normal.

2: You say simply that it "won't work", but does that include refusing to eject/close the disc tray, or is it simply the reading of discs that fails. Again, the former case indicates an unusual and unknown fault, while the latter case is much more common.

Assuming the most common and closest to normal alternative for both of the above points, the only valid guess I can come up with is some trouble involving the disc reading laser. It could be dead/dying, or it might just need some cleaning.

It's fairly common for wads of lint to build up inside a console, to the point where it affects disc reading, either by jamming the mechanism, or simply by interfering optically with the laser beam.

Yes, the first is the case. The led continuously flashes red/green without any interaction.

And in addition, the tray won't even pop out.
