Large terrain texturing

Hi

We have just started working on a an arcade simulator and we're stuck with first problem:

How to make the trrain look good? :)

Large textures don't seem to be a good idea. Some say use texture tiles, but what about roads and blendings (grass-mountain for example)

I'm sure this subject was discussed many times but using search doesn't provide any answers.
