Porting a free Game Engine

Post by mczero »

Hello everybody,

has anyone tried to port a free game engine like the Irrlicht engine or Crystal Space (ok, that's some heavy stuff) to the PS2??

There are so much free game engines, and should the ps2gl library make a simple port with lesser features be able?

Or what is with porting the free Quake 1/2 Engine to the PS2?

Hmm this could help people making some platform indepedent games.

This could make more homebrew games possible?!

The problem with porting a free game engine is that the PS2 is radically different than a PC.
Even if ps2gl supported all gl features needed for the engine you are porting, and all other bits that needed porting were porting, the performance would be horid. The only way to get good results is to write the engine specifically for the PS2.

Of course, if the game is lightweight enough it could still work good.

Unreal Tournament and Quake 3 have been ported to the PS2.
I don't think that they recoded the engine completely. Medal of Honour and Call of Duty are available on PS2, too. They are available on the PC and use the Q3 Engine.

So, it must be possible to port something like the Q2-Engine to the PS2 ?!

Or is there a free game / 3D Engine already for PS2 that anyone knows of?

They had to rewrite a lot of it. And IIRC UT for PS2 didn't run so great either...

I didn't say it wasn't possible, just thats it's a hell of a lot of work because you have to rewrite just about all of the lower level stuff and if you want good performance you'd have to rewrite a lot of the not-so-low-level stuff.

Nope, right now there are no free game engines out there for PS2. If you'd like to make one or try porting one to PS2, please feel free and let us know how it works out.
