Reading directories?

Hi,
I'm a newbie to PS2 programming, but I have years of programming experience from other platforms.
Just for testing, I thought I'd write a little elf menu+loader. Yes, I know many others exist, but this is just for learning the basics of the PS2. However, I am unable to find any examples or any good documentation on how to read the directory contents from cdrom0.
As far as I can see from the header files, I have to use fioDopen/fioDread/fioDclose, but it's only resulted in major crashes so far.
Can someone here please take a few minutes and write down a very simple example that prints the contents from cdrom0?
