NEWB in need of graphics help

I'm trying to put together a sort of image viewer, with a sorta slideshow feature. It doesn't need to progress through pictures itself, but with a press of lets say the X button, and go back with, oh, the SQUARE button. How hard would this be to do, and what is some "concepts" i could use to achieve this.
