sioshell doesn't run/work

I have just installed an EE-SIO cable into my ps2, and it works fine(I can see messages when I turn it on, and I can send data to it using a sample program I found around here somewhere)
I downloaded sioshell from svn, compiled it, but when I try and run it from ps2link(both normal and highload versions) it goes to a black screen, and I get no output on my computer. I am booting ps2link from DEV1 mode on my dms4pro modchip, is it possible that this is the problem(My ps2 won't read any cds or dvds, otherwise I would try booting ps2link straight from the exploit)
I also tried launching the program from ulaunchelf, this again failed to work properly...
Any ideas/help would be greatly appreciated.
