I not sure if this is a known thing or not.
The other day I was messing around with music files on the PSP, and I came across Sony's Sonic Stage. I opened the program and loaded and Mp3 and wave file into it. Then I right clicked on the song and noticed an option to transfer the song to my PSP Memory Stick. At the time My PSP was connected via USB port. So I proceeded to transfer the file, expecting the song to appear in the Music directory like my MP3 files. However when examining my Memory Stick Folders through My PC I noticed 2 new folders I have never seen before or heard about on these forums. One folder was called HIFI the other was called CONTROL. So I decided to examine further and found a bunch of .MSF files an .MSA file and an .XML file (the .XML file only appeared after transferring the .WAV file using Sonic Stage). I then Checked My \PSP\Music folder and noticed it was empty, so I Tried to find the Music file on my PSP and sure enough it was listed in the Music Section of the PSP and Appeared just like any other MP3 file I had previously saved to the Memory stick. But the file was not on the memory stick directly just these new folders and new files.
I am posting this in hopes to find out more information on how the PSP reads these files and to share my findings in hopes of it being useful to others who may know how to use these file types to there advantage.
Here are some screenshots of my findings.

Also SonicStage is a free program that can be found on Sony's website.

Known thing in the Sony CLIE domain. News for PSP users (then again everything is new for PSP users ;-)

Sonic Stage handles two different modes, ATRAC and MP3
So does the PSP, so does the CLIE
MP3:
You can use Sonic Stage to transfer MP3 files. It will put them in the regular folder for CLIE (\PALM\PROGRAMS\MSAUDIO). I don't know if they have added a PSP option recently (ie. \PSP\MUSIC)
You can copy the files between sticks.
Apparently the PSP will handle .m3u files for organizing albums
I don't recommend using Sonic Stage for managing .mp3s
Copying the .mp3 files yourself is much easier IMHO
NOTE: this is called the "CLIE" transfer mode (misleading name IMHO)
------
ATRAC3:
You must use Sonic Stage to transfer ATRAC3[Plus] files to a Magic Gate non-Pro memory stick (ie. an all white regular stick, or the all black 32MB MS DUO that comes with the PSP)
NOTE: MS Pro sticks won't work. Not all memory stick readers will handle Magic Gate.
NOTE2: Ignore the "MAGIC GATE" printed on the MS Pro sticks
The files are placed in the HIFI and CONTROL folders. They also contain album information (in .xml format)
You can't copy from one stick to another. These are DRM protected.
IMHO: too much work for it is worth, unless you fall in love with the Sony Connect website and their DRM content
