ps3 swap partition

Post by haubke »

hello

can somebody tell me where the swap partition is used for on the ps3? is this because we have a only 256 mb of ram? so linux uses the hdd as ram(slow) if this is true then we can use a ssd to speed up ubuntu. or is this just a bad thought?

or is there any other way to make it faster( not true software)? maybe sd cards? of something else it can use as a sort of ram
thnks

I'm curious how the PS3 would perform if it were fed an SSD drive.

If you wanted to, you could use a cheap SD card for swap space. Just create a single swap partition for the whole card and tell Linux to use it for swap. Keep in mind this will likely kill the card in as little as a few months, depending on the size and amount of swapping done.

The write speed on the SD card won't be much better than a hard drive, but the seek times will be pretty low.
