Geoff just merged ps3vram-ng, a new version of the ps3vram driver from Geert that eliminates the MTD layer and gives a significant performance boost:

Notes&#58;
  - As both ps3vram and ps3vram-ng bind to the same PS3 system bus device,
    the driver which is loaded first by udev wins. However, you can unload
    ps3vram, and load ps3vram-ng later.
  - ps3vram-ng is faster than ps3vram&#58;
       o 1 MiB blocks&#58; +50% &#40;read&#41;, +5% &#40;write&#41;
       o 4 KiB blocks&#58; +50% &#40;read&#41;, +5% &#40;write&#41;
       o 512 B blocks&#58; +10% &#40;read&#41;, +10% &#40;write&#41;
