Streaming Media vs External Storage

Post by nilum »

I was hoping for a long time before the PSP was released that it would have some sort of internal, high-capacity storage, but probably due to the size constraints as well as costs this was left out. Not to mention the fact Sony has to be making a killing off their Duo cards where markup is 200% (no lie I get the $200 1GB card for $100 on my discount from work).

1GB is decent enough to get a few CDs worth of music, but barely enough for a movie. A lot of people seem to want some type of external storage which could be adapted somehow to the duo slot.

Possibly using a similar setup to this:

It's cool that they are able to do that, but I can't imagine porting my sleek PSP across campus with a hard drive or piece of flash memory dangling off the side. What's really great about the PSP is the fact it has integrated wireless. When I first heard the PSP would be wireless capable I immediately assumed it would be capable of streaming media from the web and could be used as a portable media center. However, we all know this isn't the case.

I personally would like to be able to upload all my movies to webspace, and stream them to my PSP where a public hotspot is available. Also be able to directly download to the duo stick, and upload off of it. I feel this will probably be possible in the future. You could even stream games off a network onto a large enough Duo stick like you can do with some modded XBoxes. Like everyone else I feel like Sony hasn't fully tapped into the potential of their product.

Would you prefer some type of External Storage device or the ability to stream media and download from the web?

I was attempting(fruitless as of yet) to get a small harddrive adapted from IDE to the memory stick. This was going involve a similar process used to get non duo sticks running on the PSP by the way of an adaptor with a 10 wire plug(which plugs into the mem-stick and then into the PSP).

I am not holding much hope at all that it will work, but I am still giving it a shot. Once the adaptor comes in the mail I can let you all know if its a total failure or not.

**Added**

The reason I am doing this is because memorysticks are lacking in space and are too expensive for my tastes. I hear that 8 gig is the cap on space the PSP can handle, and an 8 gig harddrives are a dime a dozen at the computer shows.

Of course, if it does work, it somewhat ruins the portability of the PSP as well as its beauty factor.

In case you guys haven't figured it out, any of these "wishful thinking"/"idle speculation"/"just plain boring" type posts are always off-topic. Moved.

It's a topic related to the PSP. I assumed it would go into general discussion about the PSP.

Apparently you should make it "Specific Discussion" and not "General Discussion."

Fruitless or not, I just wanted to hear people's opinions about whether an external storage device was really the best solution to the PSP's limited and costly Duo cards.

Good grief, I love how you guys like to get snippy. Start with reading the forum rules and the General forum welcome back threads, which are stickied at the top of the General forum. Notice how your thread has naught to do with development, and is redundant since these same questions have come up in other threads before. You even posted in similiar threads before making the redundant post.

If you do want a place to make non-development posts such as these then I suggest trying psphacker or psphacks.

Maybe you should completely get rid of PSP General because in General discussion of the PSP should really have nothing to do with development, thus why you have a PSP development discussion forum to begin with.

You talk about threads being redundant, look at your forums.

Anyway, I had posted in a thread similar to the one I had made after the fact (check the timestamp), but my thread was not soley about External Storage or connecting a USB hard drive. I was only asking for people's opinions on whether they would prefer some type of External storage device or a way to stream media to their PSP. I haven't found any threads comparing the advantages/disadvantages etc.

So if you show me a thread I will admit I'm wrong, other than that I think this thread was wrongfully moved, and I think your forums rules are vague for the most part when dealing with what sort of topics can and can't be posted in each forum.

Maybe you should start moving threads that really are off topic:

Are you offering a product, or was this post just a roundabout way to get a pat on the head for coming up with a 'cool' idea?

The sad fact is every dog with an asshole has come by to lay their brown treasure of a post here asking the very same thing from the very beginning of ps2dev.

You are not a unique and special snowflake.

Regardless, we are not a general PSP site. The only reason this 'general' discussion part was even made was to have a dumping ground for all the crap that gets posted in the development forums. If you had read the various stickies you would know this.

Also, showing 'proof' of inconsistent application of the rules does nothing to prove the worth of this thread... it merely shows that your thread is just as bad.

Locked due to redundancy and off-topic drift.
