Need help playing MIDI in lua

Trying to get midi files to play in lua, any ideas? Has anyone already done it?
I've RTFM and there is nothing. I really don't want to convert them to XM (because you can't) and the other formats are to big of a file size for the other processing in the game that is going on, can anyone program a codex or is there another way?

The Midi format isnt currently supported in v0.15.

your best bet at this point is to convert midi to mod. that's what i did for my game.

Is *.mod a large file format, I guess I can find that out myself. I was really surprised that Lua Player 0.15 supports *.xm but not *.midi hope that changes in one of the newer releases. Thanks.
