Hi,
i think about buying a PS2 and i want to develop prorams for it. I use Linux as a host OS.
What mod chip should i buy for it? I see that one example is based on the Messiah MOD chip.
On the other hand the Crystal 1.1 MOD chip claims to be extendable and Open Source and comes with software examples.
Or are other chips better for SW development?
Thanks for any hints,
Torsten.
What MOD chip to use
Newer PS2 systems are unable to use the exploit to run programs.
From a homebrew standpoint, any modchip should allow you to boot ps2link from a cdr. Be careful you're not tempted by the ability to pirate games, however.
A less tempting method would be to use a ps2linux kit to boot ps2link via the reload1 method. Finding a kit for sale is getting harder, though.

That's really not what i have in mind. I'm only interested in SW development.
As i understand it there is some manual effort involved in getting a program to the PS2.
I'd like to automate as much as possible, so when i compile a program on the host i don't want to switch any CDs and press many buttons.
From that point of view it looks to me that the crystal 1.1 MOD chip seems to be best.
As i understand i can start a program on the memory card. I'd put ps2link there.
That way i can have my data CD/DVD in the CD tray and boot a program just by hitting some buttons.
Does that make sense?
Best regards,
Torsten.

If you are just doing software dev, then all you need is a way to boot PS2LINK, which any mod should be able to do.
There is no manual file copying or fancy button pressing you have to do once PS2LINK is running; PS2LINK can run programs from your computer, reset back to PS2LINK, and all sorts of nifty stuff controlled by commands sent from your computer.
